Market Structure

BOS vs CHoCH

A BOS breaks a swing point in the direction of the existing trend and confirms it. A CHoCH breaks one against the trend and warns the trend may be over.

Also called: Break of Structure · Change of Character · BOS · CHOCH · market structure shift · MSS

What it means

Both describe price breaking a prior swing high or low. The difference is direction relative to the trend already in place. In an uptrend, taking out a prior swing high is a Break of Structure — continuation. Taking out a prior swing low in that same uptrend is a Change of Character — the first structural evidence the uptrend is finished.

The practical consequence is that they answer different questions. A BOS tells you an existing read is still valid. A CHoCH tells you a read you were holding has been invalidated. Those are not interchangeable pieces of information, and systems that score them identically lose the distinction.

A CHoCH is the earlier and less reliable signal of the two, which is the usual trade-off: it arrives before the trend is obviously over, and it is wrong more often than a BOS is.

How OptionLab Pro’s engine uses it

In the live engine

The SMC weight table scores a CHoCH at 4 and a BOS at 2 — a change of character carries twice the weight of a continuation break, because invalidating a position is more actionable than confirming one. On a breakout regime the conflict resolver puts the indicator engine first and Smart Money second, on the explicit reasoning that structure is stale during a breakout reversal: the indicator engine reacts before a CHoCH has confirmed.

The common mistake

Where traders get this wrong

Calling any break of a recent high a BOS without first establishing which trend is in force — the same candle is a BOS or a CHoCH depending entirely on the structure it breaks into, and the label is meaningless without that context. The second mistake is waiting for a CHoCH to be as reliable as a BOS. It is not, and it is not meant to be.
