Market Regime

A classification of current conditions — trending, ranging, breakout or choppy — that determines which methods are applicable at all.

Also called: trending vs ranging · volatile chop · market condition · regime filter

What it means

The same signal means different things in different conditions. An RSI reading above 70 is a reversal warning in a range and a momentum confirmation in a trend. A moving-average crossover is informative in a trend and close to noise in a chop. Without knowing the regime, an indicator reading is ambiguous.

Classifying it is less obvious than it sounds, because the measures used — ADX level, Bollinger width, moving-average alignment — sit on continuums with no natural boundary. A threshold-based classifier flips state whenever the input hovers near the cut-off.

That flipping is not a cosmetic problem. If regime drives how the rest of the system is weighted, an unstable regime read makes the whole output unstable.

How OptionLab Pro’s engine uses it

In the live engine

Our classifier scores each bar on ADX level, 5-bar ADX velocity and persistence, Bollinger-width velocity, EMA-alignment fraction and a multi-bar squeeze streak — then applies hysteresis: 2 consecutive bars to commit a change, 3 for ranging. Regime then selects the conflict-resolution priority: on strong_trend, trending and breakout the indicator engine leads; on ranging and volatile_chop smart money leads. Probability on volatile_chop is capped at 0.80 rather than the usual 0.95, because conviction in a chop should have a ceiling.

The common mistake

Where traders get this wrong

Running one strategy across every regime and judging it on an aggregate figure. The average hides that it made money in trends and gave it back in chop, which is a regime filter problem being reported as an edge problem.
