Confluence
Independent methods agreeing on the same read. The word is only meaningful when the inputs are genuinely independent.
Also called: confluence trading · multi-factor confirmation · signal confluence
What it means
Confluence means several different kinds of evidence point the same way — a momentum read, a candle pattern and a structural level, say. The argument for it is that each has distinct failure modes, so agreement across them is harder to produce by chance than agreement within one.
The hidden problem is correlation. Stacking RSI, MACD, Stochastics and a moving-average crossover looks like four confirmations and is closer to one: they are all momentum constructions on the same price series. A model that counts them as four is overconfident by construction, and will be most overconfident exactly when all four are wrong together.
Honest confluence therefore needs two things a simple checklist does not have: a correction for overlapping inputs, and a rule for what to do when the inputs disagree.
How OptionLab Pro’s engine uses it
In the live engine
We run three engines — indicator at 0.45, candlestick at 0.28, smart money at 0.27 — and the weights renormalise to sum to 1.0 when an engine is absent. Agreement is not simply counted: a vote gate requires at least 2 directional engines when 2 or more are directional, neutral engines do not count toward quorum, and EMA-MACD collinearity is explicitly corrected for. When engines conflict, priority is resolved by regime, and when a non-aligned engine is itself confident above 0.60 the final probability is CAPPED rather than averaged — because genuine disagreement should reduce confidence, not get smoothed away.

Where traders get this wrong
Counting correlated indicators as independent confirmations. It is the central error in most confluence systems and it is self-reinforcing: the more momentum indicators you add, the more confident the model gets and the less additional information it actually has.
