Candlestick Patterns

Three White Soldiers

Three consecutive strong candles in one direction, each opening within the previous body — steady accumulation rather than one spike.

Also called: three advancing soldiers · three black crows · advance block

What it means

Three White Soldiers is three substantial up-candles in a row, each opening inside the prior candle's body and closing above its high. The containment is the point: it describes sustained, orderly buying rather than a single gap-driven lurch. Three Black Crows is the bearish mirror.

If each candle opens above the previous close instead of inside its body, the move is gapping rather than advancing — a different event with different follow-through.

Advance Block is the weakening variant, where the three candles progressively shrink or their upper wicks lengthen. Same three-up shape, opposite implication.

How OptionLab Pro’s engine uses it

In the live engine

Each successive open must land INSIDE the prior candle's body range — not merely above its close. And Advance Block is checked before Three White Soldiers, so the weakening variant is reported when it qualifies; reversed, the healthy pattern would match first and the warning formation could never fire. The same applies to Identical Three Crows, which is checked before Three Black Crows.

The common mistake

Where traders get this wrong

Not testing where each candle opens. Three up-candles is an extremely common shape; three up-candles each opening inside the last body is much rarer and is what the pattern actually claims. Also: reading Advance Block as bullish because it looks like three green candles — it is the exhaustion version of the same shape.
