Volume Confirmation (candlestick)
Requiring a pattern to form on meaningfully above-average volume before it counts — participation, not just shape.
Also called: volume spike · volume confirmed pattern · candle volume filter
What it means
A candlestick pattern is a claim about who was in control. On thin volume that claim is weak: the shape formed because few people traded, not because a handover happened. Volume confirmation filters for patterns that formed with real participation.
The threshold decides whether the filter does anything. Set it too close to average and nearly every bar qualifies, so the filter adds a step and removes nothing. That is a specific trap on Indian intraday data, where volume is spiky and a low multiple is satisfied almost always.
Volume confirmation also cannot rescue a weak pattern. A high-volume Doji is still a Doji.
How OptionLab Pro’s engine uses it
In the live engine
Our spike factor is 1.5x the baseline, and it is documented as do-not-lower: 1.2x was tried and was satisfied on nearly every intraday NSE bar, which made the filter decorative. Crucially, a volume spike cannot bypass the evidence guard — the pattern's own weight still caps the contribution, so volume amplifies a real pattern and cannot manufacture one. Where a feed reports zero volume, as several index sources do, a base volume is substituted rather than letting a zero poison the volume-derived states.

Where traders get this wrong
Treating volume confirmation as an upgrade to the signal rather than a filter on it. It tells you the pattern formed with participation; it does not make a weak formation strong. And a threshold near 1.0x is worse than no filter, because it creates the impression of rigour without removing anything.
