A salaried trader in Delhi watches his screen only during lunch — twelve-thirty to one-thirty IST. He has been trading NIFTY on 1-minute charts for six months. Every candle is a whipsaw, every trade a loss. The problem is not his discipline or his indicator settings. The problem is that he is playing the wrong game on the wrong field. This lesson maps the field — where you can play, which timeframe fits your life, and why F&O exists as its own segment.

The playground — three exchanges

  • NSE — the largest. Hosts the Cash segment (RELIANCE, HDFCBANK) and the F&O segment (NIFTY50, BANKNIFTY, FINNIFTY, MIDCPNIFTY, stock futures and options).
  • BSE — owns the SENSEX F&O contracts.
  • MCX — separate world. Crude, gold, silver, natural gas. Different hours, different participants.

The word segment matters. Cash and F&O are not the same market — different rules, different margins, different risk profiles. You can buy 1 share of RELIANCE in Cash; in F&O you must trade in lots, defined by SEBI.

Timeframes — match the chart to your life

Every chart has a timeframe. Each candle on a 5-minute chart is 5 minutes of price action. The right timeframe depends on how much of your day you can actually give to the screen.

i
Scalper (1m – 5m)

Full attention. Trade lasts minutes. The most demanding profile — spread plus commission eats small moves alive. Most retail traders try this because it looks exciting; few survive it.

ii
Intraday (5m – 15m)

Trade lasts 30 minutes to a few hours. Screen check every 10–15 minutes between meetings. This is where most working professionals should live — including our Delhi trader stuck on 1m. Switching him to 15m would have saved months of pain.

iii
Swing & Positional (1h – 4h – 1d)

Trade lasts days to weeks. Check the chart once or twice a day. Slower decisions, fewer trades, lower stress. Compatible with a full-time job.

⚠ IMPORTANT CATCH

The wrong-timeframe tax is the single biggest hidden cost in retail trading. A scalper's setup on a swing trader's schedule produces the same outcome every time — late entries, missed exits, accumulated losses. Pick the timeframe that fits the life you live, not the life you wish you had.

Why F&O exists — and why lot size matters

Futures and Options were not invented for retail speculation. They exist for two reasons:

  1. Hedging — an institution buys puts to insure a large portfolio against a crash, the way you insure a car.
  2. Leveraged speculation — a smaller participant uses margin to take a position larger than capital alone would allow.

Retail traders mostly walk path two. That leverage is real and so is the risk on the other side of it.

The lot size is the SEBI-mandated minimum units per contract. As of 2024-11-20:

| Instrument | Lot size | |---|---| | NIFTY50 | 75 | | BANKNIFTY | 35 | | FINNIFTY | 65 | | MIDCPNIFTY | 50 | | SENSEX | 20 |

If a NIFTY50 option trades at a premium of ₹100, one lot costs 75 × 100 = ₹7,500. Per-point P&L is also 75 × point move. Plan capital accordingly — never trade a lot size your account cannot survive twice in a row.

How OptionLab fits

OptionLab Pro is built around this reality. The scanner shows up to six timeframes — 1m, 5m, 15m, 1h, 4h, 1d — side by side, so you see how the same instrument looks to a scalper and a swing trader at the same moment, across the full F&O instrument list from day one. Lot sizes are pre-loaded and kept in sync with SEBI revisions.

For our Delhi trader, the answer is now obvious. Open the multi-timeframe view, set 15m as primary, pin a 1h reference for context. Set an alert on the 15m so he is notified when a signal fires — no babysitting between 12:30 and 1:30. Match the tool to the life.

Best timeframe
15m
for Lunch break only (12:30–1:30 IST)
One hour of focused screen time. 15m candles = 4 bars in your window — enough to read a setup without babysitting every tick. This is our Delhi-trader anchor.
The Platform plan opens all six timeframes on every F&O instrument; without it the live scanner is 1 TF on NIFTY50.
PRACTICE

Pick your timeframe — and prove it works

  1. Be honest about how many minutes per hour you can actually watch the screen during market hours.
  2. Open Strategy Lab, pick NIFTY50, run a 30-day backtest on the matching timeframe.
  3. Run the same backtest one step faster, and one step slower. The middle result is rarely the best — that surprises everyone the first time.

BOTTOM LINE
  • Three exchanges, three personalities — NSE for index F&O, BSE for SENSEX F&O, MCX for commodities.
  • Cash and F&O are different segments with different rules — F&O always trades in lots.
  • Pick the timeframe that fits your life — 15m for most working professionals, not 1m.
  • F&O exists for hedging and leveraged speculation; the lot size defines your minimum exposure.
  • OptionLab Pro shows up to six timeframes at once and keeps SEBI lot sizes pre-loaded.

Next up: if the playground is the field, then candles are the language spoken on it. In the next lesson — Reading a candle — we'll decode what every OHLC bar is actually telling you, and why most traders read only half of it.
