Open the scanner at 11:30 IST. A row appears for NIFTY 15m: BUY+, probability 0.78, confidence 4, regime trending. Just below it sits another row for the same instrument on a different timeframe: plain BUY, probability 0.62, confidence 3. Same direction. Different conviction. Different position size. Different trade. The previous thirteen lessons taught you the ingredients — candles, regimes, indicators, patterns, options literacy. This lesson teaches you to read the dish the scanner serves.

The four signal categories

Every scanner row resolves to exactly one of four categories. There is no fifth. Each carries a specific action.

i
BUY

The engine sees bullish setup. Your action: buy a CE (call option). Strike selection is your call — the scanner does not pick strikes.

ii
SELL

The engine sees bearish setup. Your action: buy a PE (put option). The label says "SELL" because the engine speaks in directional terms — but your retail action is always to buy the put. You are never asked to sell an option naked.

iii
CONFLICT

The three engines disagree among themselves. The Indicator engine sees one direction, the Candlestick or Smart Money engine sees the other. This is information, not a malfunction — the market is genuinely indecisive at this moment. The right action is usually to wait.

iv
NEUTRAL

No engine is producing a meaningful directional reading. Flat tape, low conviction, transitional regime. Stand aside.

⚠ IMPORTANT CATCH

SELL is the trap word. The category is named SELL because the engine speaks bullish/bearish — but the user action is buy a PE. Retail buying a put has limited downside (the premium paid). Retail selling a naked option has unlimited risk. OptionLab never asks you to sell naked. SELL → buy PE. Always.

The + suffix — what makes it special

Sometimes a category shows as BUY+ or SELL+ instead of plain BUY or SELL. The plus is not decoration. It signals the highest conviction tier the engine produces.

Two conditions must both be true for the plus to appear:

  1. All three engines agree on the same direction. Indicator engine says bullish, Candlestick engine says bullish, Smart Money engine says bullish. No abstention, no dissent. This is the cascade gate — every engine has to vote the same way, not just a majority.
  2. The probability is above the high-conviction threshold. Not "above 50/50" — high above. The engine has to be confident enough that the setup is unusually clean, not just slightly favoured.

When both happen, the plus appears. Roughly speaking, plain BUY is "majority agreed, one engine abstained". BUY+ is "everyone aligned, and the engine is unusually sure". Position size scales accordingly — a BUY+ deserves a larger allocation than a plain BUY of the same underlying.

Back in the regimes lesson you learned that regime context filters indicator readings. The plus suffix is what that filtering produces in the cleanest cases. It is rare on purpose. Most rows will be plain BUY, plain SELL, or NEUTRAL. Plus is the gift, not the norm.

Probability vs Confidence — two different numbers

Every signal row shows two numbers that traders constantly confuse. They answer different questions.

Probability (shown as 0.62, 0.78, etc.) answers: what is the engine's estimated chance this direction will play out? It is the 3-engine vote summarised into a single number. Higher probability means higher estimated edge — but it is still a probability, not a guarantee.

Confidence (shown as 1 through 5) answers: how strongly do the indicators inside the Indicator engine agree among themselves? If they are all pointing the same way, confidence is high. If half lean bullish and half neutral, confidence is mid-pack.

A signal can have high probability and low confidence — the 3-engine vote was strong, but the indicators were split. A signal can have low probability and high confidence — the indicators all agreed, but the Candlestick and Smart Money engines pushed back. Both numbers matter; both are shown for a reason.

Reading the anchor row

Now the row you opened with — NIFTY 15m, BUY+, probability 0.78, confidence 4, regime trending.

Decoded: the engine sees bullish setup (action: buy a CE). All three engines agreed (plus suffix). Probability is well above the high-conviction threshold (0.78). Indicators inside the Indicator engine were largely in sync (confidence 4 of 5). And it is happening in a trending regime — exactly the kind of context where opposing indicators carry less weight and aligned indicators carry more.

The other row — plain BUY, probability 0.62, confidence 3 — is the same direction with much less conviction. Two engines agreed, one abstained or barely cleared neutral. Indicators were mixed. You can still trade it, but with a smaller position, tighter risk, or you can simply wait for it to ripen into a plus.

BUY CE+
BUY CE+ means: bullish setup. Your action: buy CE. Highest conviction tier: all three engines (Indicator, Candlestick, Smart Money) aligned + probability cleared the high-conviction threshold. Position size larger than a plain signal.
Probability
0.78
Engine's estimate this direction plays out: 78%. The "+" means probability cleared the high-conviction threshold AND all three engines agree.
Confidence
4/5
Strong agreement between the indicators inside the Indicator engine.
Regime
trending
Directional market with normal pullbacks. Indicators confirming the trend get full weight; opposing ones are downweighted.

Regimeranging
Every OptionLab row tags regime. A BUY in trending is a fundamentally different setup than BUY in volatile_chop, even when probability and confidence look similar. SELL never means "sell" — it means buy a PE. The buyer's max loss is always the premium paid.
PRACTICE

Read your first signal

  1. Open the scanner. Pick any F&O instrument and any timeframe you have access to on your plan.
  2. Find one row that shows a clean BUY or SELL with no plus. Read the probability and confidence. What is the regime tag?
  3. If you find a BUY+ or SELL+ in the same session, compare the two side by side. Note how probability and confidence both differ.
  4. Resist the urge to act yet — Lesson 15 walks through filter setup and Strategy Lab before any live action.

BOTTOM LINE
  • Four categories: BUY (buy CE), SELL (buy PE — never sell naked), CONFLICT (engines disagree, usually wait), NEUTRAL (no setup).
  • The + suffix appears when all three engines agree and probability clears the high-conviction threshold. Plain signals are common; plus signals are rare and deserve larger position sizing.
  • Probability is the 3-engine vote summarised. Confidence is how unanimous the indicators inside the Indicator engine are. They are different questions; both are shown.
  • CONFLICT is information — it means the market is genuinely indecisive, not that the scanner is broken.
  • SELL never means sell. SELL always means buy a PE.

Next up: you can now read what the scanner says. In the final lesson — Your first scanner setup — you build a watchlist, configure a filter, and run your first backtest in Strategy Lab. The product becomes useful.
