Open BANKNIFTY on the 15-minute chart and look at June 10, 11:15 IST. The MACD line crosses above its signal line — bullish crossover. The histogram bars below are expanding — momentum is building. Glance at the price chart and you can see the EMA stack is already pointing up. Three confirmations of the same idea, right? Wrong. It is one confirmation, measured three slightly different ways. That single insight is what separates a careful engine from a naive one, and it is the heart of this lesson.

The anatomy of MACD

MACD looks like three things on a chart, but it is built from one core calculation.

  • MACD line — the difference between a fast EMA and a slow EMA. When the fast EMA pulls away from the slow EMA, the MACD line rises. When they converge, it falls. It is literally an EMA spread.
  • Signal line — an EMA of the MACD line itself. A smoother version of the same number. The two lines crossing is the "MACD crossover" everyone references.
  • Histogram — the difference between the MACD line and the signal line, drawn as bars. When the histogram is growing, the spread is widening. When it is shrinking, the spread is narrowing.

The key point: every part of MACD is derived from EMAs. There is no second data source. There is no fresh information that EMA does not already see. MACD is a re-expression of EMA, not an independent observer.

Three signals from one indicator

MACD gives you three distinct read-outs, each answering a different question.

i
Crossover — direction change

MACD line crosses above its signal line → bullish. MACD line crosses below its signal line → bearish. The cross is the cleanest event signal MACD produces, and the most often watched.

ii
Histogram — momentum acceleration

The histogram is not about direction; it is about how fast the direction is changing. Histogram expanding (bars getting taller) = momentum building. Histogram contracting (bars shrinking) = momentum fading even if the crossover has not flipped yet. This is the early warning that the move is running out of energy.

iii
Divergence — hidden weakness

Price makes a new high, but MACD makes a lower high. The price action looks fine; the underlying force does not agree. This is bearish divergence and it is a classic top-warning. The mirror — price makes a new low while MACD makes a higher low — is bullish divergence.

The double-counting trap

This is the part most retail traders never hear, and the part most scanners get wrong.

When a Golden Cross fires on the EMA pair AND a MACD bullish crossover fires AND the MACD histogram is expanding upward — that is not three independent votes. It is one trend reading expressed three times. Because MACD is an EMA spread, anything that moves the EMAs apart also moves MACD. They are mathematically correlated.

A naive scanner adds these three together and produces a high confidence score that is artificially high. The engine "saw three indicators agree" but the three indicators are watching the same thing.

⚠ IMPORTANT CATCH

Correlated indicators do not multiply conviction — they share it. EMA + MACD bullish at the same time is closer to one strong signal than to two independent confirmations. The June 10 BANKNIFTY setup looked like a triple-stacked signal; in reality the engine should treat it as a single trend signal with momentum support. Two indicators saying the same thing because they are built from the same data is one indicator wearing two costumes.

How our engine handles it

OptionLab Pro's Indicator engine knows EMA and MACD are correlated. When both fire bullish at the same time, the engine does not treat them as two independent votes. It recognises the overlap and avoids manufacturing false confidence — both contribute, but the second one does not add the full weight of a fresh, uncorrelated signal would.

This is one of those things you cannot see in the output and would not notice if it were missing. But over hundreds of trades, the difference is meaningful. Naive scanners produce a stream of "high-conviction" entries that all leaned on the same correlated math; the engine produces fewer alerts, but each one is leaning on indicators that are actually saying different things.

So where does MACD have the most independent value? When it disagrees with EMA — divergence. Price and EMA say up; MACD says momentum is dying. That is when MACD is contributing a fresh observation, not echoing the EMA.

MACD is another vote inside the Indicator engine, sitting alongside EMA (which you met last lesson). Like EMA, it never fires a signal by itself. The Indicator engine combines its constituent indicators into one score, and that score votes against the Candlestick and Smart Money engines for the final read.

See the divergence value yourself

  1. Open Strategy Lab. Pick BANKNIFTY, 15m timeframe, last 60 days.
  2. First run: filter for MACD bullish crossover only. Note the win rate.
  3. Second run: filter for MACD bullish crossover with an EMA already trending up. Compare.
  4. Third run: filter for MACD bullish divergence (price low, MACD higher low). This is the smallest set — but often the most informative.

BOTTOM LINE
  • MACD is built from EMAs — fast EMA minus slow EMA, plus a signal line (EMA of that), plus a histogram (difference between them).
  • Three signals: crossover (direction change), histogram expansion/contraction (momentum), divergence (hidden weakness).
  • EMA and MACD share DNA — they are correlated indicators, not independent confirmations.
  • The June 10 BANKNIFTY setup was one trend signal with momentum support, not three stacked confirmations.
  • MACD's most independent value is in divergence — when it disagrees with the EMA, it is genuinely adding new information.
  • Inside our engine, MACD is one of the Indicator-engine votes. The engine recognises EMA-MACD overlap and avoids double-counting.

Next up: EMA and MACD answer the question "is there a trend, and is it accelerating?" The next indicator — VWAP — answers a different question entirely: "where is the institutional average price today, and is price above or below it?" And it has one quiet feature that quietly matters for Indian traders.
