MACD

The difference between a fast and a slow EMA, with a signal line and histogram — a trend-following momentum indicator.

Also called: moving average convergence divergence · MACD histogram · MACD crossover

What it means

MACD subtracts a 26-period EMA from a 12-period EMA. A 9-period EMA of that difference is the signal line, and the histogram is the gap between the two. Crossovers of the MACD line and signal line are read as momentum shifts.

Because MACD is built from moving averages it is a lagging construction by design. It confirms that a move is underway; it does not anticipate one, and it produces frequent crossovers with little follow-through in a range.

MACD and an EMA trend read are not independent evidence of each other. Both are moving-average constructions on the same price series, so when they agree, much of that agreement is arithmetic rather than confirmation.

How OptionLab Pro’s engine uses it

In the live engine

Because MACD and EMA are collinear, the engine applies an explicit correction: when EMA and MACD are both non-Neutral AND point the same way, 1.5x the trend multiplier is added to the trend-weight DENOMINATOR, damping the combined contribution. The correction deliberately does not apply when MACD is flat — two agreeing moving-average reads are one piece of evidence counted twice, and double-counting it is how a confluence model fools itself.

The common mistake

Where traders get this wrong

Treating an EMA crossover and a MACD crossover as two confirmations. They are largely the same measurement, and stacking them inflates confidence without adding information. Any honest confluence model has to correct for this; most do not.
